Flights of Genius

Ogilvy & Mather New York and Joshua Liner Gallery unveil a series of commissioned murals by celebrated artist Stephen Powers that reinterpret the words and quotes of agency founder David Ogilvy.

Power’s bold graphic style, reminiscent of vintage advertising illustrations puts a unique emphasis on famous Ogilvy sayings and transforms them into actionable words designed to inspire the viewer. Painted in bright colors on the North stairwell of the agency’s headquarters office, the murals run from the first to the 11th floor of the office building.

The murals are being unveiled to coincide with the 100th birthday of David Ogilvy, one of the most influential and important figures in modern advertising. Awesome!

Aveti grija, in general, cum va alegeti numele! Conteaza!

Felicitari organizatorilor: inoras.ro, Dechatlon. Great job, Mono and the rest of the bunch!

How Marketers Are Using Social Media

- Marketers place high value on social media: A significant 90% of marketers indicate that social media is important for their business.

- Measurement and integration are top areas marketers want to master: Onethird of all social media marketers want to know how to monitor and measure the return on investment (ROI) of social media and integrate their social media activities.

- Social media marketing takes a lot of time: The majority of marketers (58%) are using social media for 6 hours or more each week, and more than a third (34%) invest 11 or more hours weekly.

- Video marketing on the rise: A significant 77% of marketers plan on increasing their use of YouTube and video marketing, making it the top area marketers will invest in for 2011.

- Marketers seek to learn more about Facebook and blogging: 70% of marketers want to learn more about Facebook and 69% want to learn more about blogging.

- The top benefits of social media marketing: The number-one advantage of social media marketing (by a long shot) is generating more business exposure, as indicated by 88% of marketers. Increased traffic (72%) and improved search rankings (62%) were also major advantages.

- The top social media tools: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogs were the top four social media tools used by marketers, in that order. Facebook has eclipsed Twitter to take the top spot since our 2010 study.
- Social media outsourcing underutilized: Only 28% of businesses are outsourcing some portion of their social media marketing.

Statistics Poetry

A WORD ON STATISTICS

by Wislawa Szymborska
(translated from the Polish by Joanna Trzeciak)

Out of every hundred people,
those who always know better:
fifty-two.

Unsure of every step:
almost all the rest.

Ready to help,
if it doesn't take long:
forty-nine.

Always good,
because they cannot be otherwise:
four -- well, maybe five.

Able to admire without envy:
eighteen.

Led to error
by youth (which passes):
sixty, plus or minus.

Those not to be messed with:
four-and-forty.

Living in constant fear
of someone or something:
seventy-seven.

Capable of happiness:
twenty-some-odd at most.

Harmless alone,
turning savage in crowds:
more than half, for sure.

Cruel
when forced by circumstances:
it's better not to know,
not even approximately.

Wise in hindsight:
not many more
than wise in foresight.

Getting nothing out of life except things:
thirty
(though I would like to be wrong).

Balled up in pain
and without a flashlight in the dark:
eighty-three, sooner or later.

Those who are just:
quite a few, thirty-five.

But if it takes effort to understand:
three.

Worthy of empathy:
ninety-nine.

Mortal:
one hundred out of one hundred --
a figure that has never varied yet.

Wislawa Szymborska won the 1996 Nobel Prize for literature. Her most recent book in English is View With a Grain of Sand (1995). She lives in Krakow, Poland.

Imi vine in minte BRD, prin sustinerea proiectului YouthBank.

2. In ce masura marile companii au raspuns in 2010 asteptarilor tale in privinta implicarii in societate?
In mare masura sunt multumit de implicare companiilor in societate, desi este loc de mai mult. Mult mai mult! Mi-as dori o mai mare implicare la nivel local, in dezvoltarea comunitatilor, in promovarea spiritului filantropic in mediul corporatist.

Deja o fac, prin implicare mea in miscare de dezvoltare a fundatiilor comunitare din Romania si prin implicarea directa in infiintarea celei din Iasi. Pot pune la dispozitie expertiza dobanditata in furnizarea de servicii profesioniste in filantropie, astfel incat impactul contributiei companiilor sa fie transparent si relevant.

Smsiasi a avut toate astea! A fost cel mai bun eveniment de social media/business organizat in Iasi in ultimii 5 ani.
Prezenta masiva formata din bloggeri, oamenii de business, specialisti in social media, antreprenori a facut ca Iasul sa fie, vineri 4 martie, in centrul atentiei in .ro.

Diesel Island, land of stupid and home of the brave

WE, AT DIESEL, HAVE A STUPID DREAM.
What would it be like to start a nation from scratch?
To take what is great from the countries we know and ditch what is bad.
To re-write the laws.
To right social wrongs.
A country for only the brave.

Check out this set from the "Stupid" campaign. Nice development of the initial idea.

The Psychology of Color

One of the most fascinating and overlooked elements web designers tend to overlook is the influence of color on their website visitors. While a color palette may look visually pleasing, is it psychologically pleasing? When you go to design your next website pay special attention to your color choices and what they actually mean.

Antreprenoriada

HP TouchPad

HP has just announced its entrant to the quickly crowding tablet market: the TouchPad. Built on Palm's WebOS, it's one of the few new tablets to not run Android.

The 9.7-inch tablet is due to be released this summer, coming loaded with a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, on-board gyroscope, accelerometer, compass and either 16GB or 32GB of on board storage. You get a front-facing camera, too. The first version will be Wi-Fi only, but look for both 3G and 4G models to come rolling out before too long.

The Power of Fans! Greatest BMW AD in History

Above is a video put together by the son of a motorcycle owner. It is the greatest brand-building commercial of all time and BMW should buy rights to it immediately and show it all over the world forever.

The story behind the video is bellow.

This is a photo story of my father's 1958 BMW R50:
Boy meets girl, gets married, buys motorcycle. Rides it for 60,000 miles and has accident when wife is pregnant with 3rd child. (me) Wife orders motorcycle to be taken off road until all her children are grown and on their own. One day when bike is moved to a different storage location, son sits on bike and dreams of being a Jedi Master like his father. Couple grows old together and bike is not ridden for 40 years. Husband is now a grandfather of 7 and married for 50 years, when he dies of a stroke at age 71.
Son looks over the old rotting machine and finds note attached to it from his father to him. Son decides to restore the old 1958 BMW R-50 as a tribute to his father. With the help of many friends, especially Peter Nettesheim, world renowned BMW collector, bike is restored to look even better than it did when it was built in Germany.

I don't believe one can find something similarly moving about a brand.

CSR has failed

The soon to be published book by Wayne Visser, The Age of Responsibility: CSR 2.0 and the New DNA of Business, argues that CSR, as a business, governance and ethics system, has failed. This assumes that success or failure is measured in terms of the net impact (positive or negative) of business on society and the environment.

The reason CSR 1.0 has failed is not through lack of good intent, nor even through lack of effort. The old CSR has failed because our global economic system is based on a fundamentally flawed design. For all the miraculous energy unleashed by Adam Smith’s ‘invisible hand’ of the free market, our modern capitalist system is faulty at its very core.
Simply put, it is conceived as an abstract system without limits.

What is now needed is a new form of CSR - which the book dubs CSR 2.0.
This combines five elements:
1) Creativity - Directing business creativity to solving the world's social and environmental problems
2) Scalability - A 'shining pilot project' is pointless if it can't be scaled for mass use
3) Responsiveness - greater transparency, through reporting mechanisms and through sharing intellectual resources (eg/technology patents)
4) Glocality - Understanding local contexts and applying local solutions without forsaking global principles
5) Circularity - Closed loop production - such as factories that produce drinking water as waste or materials that can feed into industry as high quality raw materials for new products

The end result is a new meaning for CSR - Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility.

When all is said and done, CSR 2.0 comes down to one thing: clarification and reorientation of the purpose of business. It is a complete misnomer to believe that the purpose of business is to be profitable, or to serve shareholders. These are simply means to an end. Ultimately, the purpose of business is to serve society, through the provision of safe, high quality products and services that enhance our well being, without eroding our ecological and community life-support systems.

CSR is dead! Long live CSR!

The Untold Story of Women and The Web

A survey commissioned by Yahoo and Starcom Mediavest Group (PDF) found that  96 percent of women say that they frequently feel positive emotions while online. If your marketing doesn’t elicit a positive emotional reaction, then you’re missing an opportunity.

Qualitative findings from a Just Ask a Woman Live listening session identified eight personality profiles for women when they are online.
  1. Digital Cowgirl – the internet pioneer
  • 51 percent of women say they love finding new and exciting websites on the internet
  • 42 percent say they will go online even if they are not looking for anything in particular
  • Where to find her: games websites
  1. Digital Cassandra – the influential predictor of “what’s next”
  • 43 percent of women say they tell all their friends about websites they like
  • 22 percent claim they are usually the first of their friends to discover an interesting website
  • Where to find her: news, finance, home & family and food & entertainment websites
  1. Digital Diva – uses the “smartest” sites
  • 16 percent of women say they use the Internet to buy luxury items.
  • Where to find her: shopping, travel, health & beauty, entertainment & gossip and finance websites
  1. Digital Debutante – new to the internet, but not a novice
  • 20 percent of women state that although they are relatively new to the internet, they are constantly learning about new applications and websites.
  1. Digital Detective – internet researcher
  • 82 percent of women say the Internet is the first place they go if they need to conduct research
  • 58 percent can spend hours on the Internet researching every aspect of an issue that they are interested in.
  • Where to find her: news, weather, finance, home & family and food & entertaining websites
  1. Digital Voyeur – uses the internet to anonymously observe
  • More than 20 percent of respondents use the internet to look up old friends or boyfriends
  • Where to find her: news, finance, games, home & family, food & entertainment and astrology websites
  1. Digital Socialite
  • 12 percent of women agree with the statement: “I use the Internet to help me plan my social life”
  • 15 percent say they have used the Internet to meet new people
  • Where to find her: travel, entertainment and gossip websites
  1. Digital Shopkeeper
  • Just over 10 percent of women say they have started an online business or have used the internet to generate income.
  • Where to find her: news websites

As noted in this report, much of the conventional wisdom about how and why women use
the Internet may actually be wrong. What is certain is that the digital dialogue between marketers and their female customers will never be the same. Reaching women on line will require greater insight, a better understanding of their attitudes and values, and the willingness to engage in an empowering dialogue.

Ad Planner 1000 says....

What Ad Planner 1000 says about our habits online? Here is a a list of the top 1,000 global sites on the web by unique users as measured by DoubleClick Ad Planner. The sites on this list reflect 3 seasonal trends:

              - Users are playing, not watching sports - Fifa.com, NBA.com and ESPN.com all saw declines as regular visitors turned off their computers and headed outside to play.
              - Users are, however, watching blockbusters - Fandango.com, moviefone.com, rottentomatoes.com and netflix.com all saw traffic increases.
              - Users are being social - Cooking sites like allrecipes.com and cooks.com saw increases, as did dating sites zoosk.com and match.com, while twitter.com and hi5.com saw declines.

I guess we are increasingly start to play out, after having meals at home. Or something like that.

Scrisoare deschisa catre publicitate si marketing

Cititi scrisoarea de mai sus. Este in engleza.

Promovati initiativa, spune-ti celor apropiati despre inititiva. Orice ajutor conteaza.

Va multumesc!

- Over 50% of the world’s population is under 30
- Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.
- Facebook added over 200 million users in less than a year
- If Facebook were a country it would be the world’s 3rd largest (previously 4th)
- Britney Spears replaces Ellen DeGeneres (Twitter stat)
- 50% of the mobile Internet traffic in the UK is for Facebook
- Wikipedia has 15 million articles (previously 13 million)
- 60 million status updates happen on Facebook daily

The end of the second video says it all! If your business will still exist in 5 years time, that's the ROI of social media. So, what are you going to do about it?

Beautifully Banal

The Type Directors Club has asked a few designers to find a classified/personal newspaper ad from their local community to “hijack” typographically. When redesigned, the once banal and disposable classified ads will be reinterpreted by the designer into a one-of-a-kind collectible poster. Each poster will be auctioned, with proceeds to benefit the TDC Scholarship Fund

Diesel - Sex Sells

Hilarious example of how to create buzz and word of mouth for your brand. Diesel created this hard selling performance, in Piazza Della Scala, Milano, as part of the new "Sex Sells"campaign.

Look at the reactions of the ad-hoc spectators.

What the fuck is social media?

A good way to think about social media is that all of this is actually just about being human beings. Sharing ideas, cooperating and collaborating to create art, thinking and commerce, vigorous debate and discourse, finding people who might be good friends, allies and lovers – it’s what our species has built several civilisations on. That’s why it is spreading so quickly, not because it’s great shiny new technology, but because it lets us be ourselves – only more. so.

Brand Butling

"It has never been more important for companies to turn their brand into a service. Jaded, time-poor, pragmatic consumers yearn for service and care, while the mobile online revolution makes it possible to offer über-relevant services to consumers anywhere, anytime. Basically, if you're going to embrace one big consumer trend this year, please let it be 'brand butlers'."

STOP SAYING "VIRAL"

As mighty ninja, Faris put it, spreadable media is a more accurate term. If it doesn't spread, it's dead. Spreadability as a concept describes how the properties of the media environment, texts, audiences, and business models work together to enable easy and widespread circulation of mutually meaningful content within a networked culture.

Talent imitates, genius steal

De cum am vazut noua reclama Timisoreana - Ceasul, mi s-a parut familiara. De parca am mai vazut-o. Nuo mai vazusem, dar o idee similara (identica) mai vazusem intr-o reclama pentru SPDR State Street Global Advisors cu acelasi nume, Clock Tower, facuta de The Gate Worldwide in 2009.

Judecati si voi.

Brand Activation - Heineken

This is, by far, one of the best examples of successful brand activation I've seen!

I would have loved to take part in the event.
Such a great, engaging experience! Bravo to all parts involved in the creation!

The video is a bit long, but worth watching.

Logorama

Spectacular car chases, an intense hostage crisis, wild animals rampaging through the city... and even more in LOGORAMA !

The short was created by directors within H5, a French graphic studio renowned for its CD front covers (Superdiscount, Air, Demon...) and artistic direction (Dior, Cartier, YSL...). Members François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain directed many music videos (Alex Gopher, Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Röyksopp...), and are regularly invited to exhibitions for their artistic talents (2007 Nuit Blanche, Beaubourg, MoMA).
Is nominated for best animated short at this year's Oscars, so take aprox. quarter of an hour to watch it. And is full of corporate and brand logos (around 2,500 of them) Brilliant!

*Update Just won the Oscar! Well deserved!

How clients can create a shared agenda

Things a client can do to inspire trust and create a shared agenda:

Have lunch or a drink with the key people on your agency brand team. Talk about communications in general. Get alignment on models of how communications work.

Take a half-day with the agency to review ideas. Take 10 ideas you think are great, ask them to bring 10 ideas they think are great. Discuss.

Organise team-building events.

Inspire the team. Before briefing their new agency, Berghaus sent a box of their outdoor clothing and a map reference. The briefing took place up a mountain.

Give information when asked for it. “You don’t need to know that” is demoralising.

Ensure that the originators of the ideas, whether you get to meet them or not, are fully briefed on your business situation rather than just your communication needs. This way you may get a creative business idea rather than just a new campaign.

Negotiate the brief with your agency, don’t just deliver it as a fait accompli. Use their market knowledge and insight to add value to your own ideas and work with them to build a platform for creative thinking and originality.

Apply the normal rules of courtesy. Regularly keeping your agency waiting in reception for an hour will not make them want to go the hard yards for you.
